Our backpack delivery program is made possible through Sequoia Sun who runs Sail Aid International. They provide critical delivery and aid to "hard to get to" places in the world. Move to Matter will be affiliated with Sail Aid International where both organizations can further realize their goals. Sail Aid will offer Move to Matter the opportunity to deliver needed products to Haiti and Move to Matter will offer Sail Aid the abilitity to receive donations through our organization, earmarked for Sail Aid projects and deliveries, allowing them to be fully tax deductible. We are particularly excited about this affiliation! Sequoia, the Captain and Founder of Sail Aid, has a 10 year commitment to his mission and Move to Matter is excited to be a part of his vision and passion.

Delivery of backpacks made possible through Sail Aid International

11/28/2018

Move to Matter has been able to deliver backpacks to Haiti for its second year.

Why are backpacks so important? When you live with close to no possessions, receiving a backpack through Little Footprints Big Steps, filled with supplies gives you hope that someone cares and is watching. Also many of the children that have the privilege to go to school walk miles. Having a simple possession of a backpack makes their life easier every day. Little Footprints Big Steps helps fund many children  going to school for the first time. They go in the mountains where no one else goes to connect with hundreds of families to give them hope.

Our Trip to Haiti - Intense, Loving & Baffling

11/28/2017

Comments

After several intense drives for Little Footprints Big Steps, we had the opportunity to meet our affiliates in Haiti.

While we still are digesting this trip, we can clearly say that it was intense, loving and baffling - all in one. Intense because of the extreme poverty, inequity and because of the way Little Footprints Big Steps approached so many issues with commitment without borders. It was loving because Little Footprints Big Steps has opened the universe of possibilities to help the Haitian children.  They celebrate something as simple as having a Princess Night for a few at-risk children to single handedly helping 150 families get medical treatment with a 2 day clinic. Baffling because it seems that few care.

At the age of 18, Morgan, the founder of Little Footprints Big Steps went to Haiti after the earthquake. On the trip, Morgan ended up living in an orphanage for 9 months. In that nine months she could not bear to leave and ended up developing her own Safehouse where children would be returned to their families. She had learned the orphanages misrepresented themselves saying that they could offer a better life and parents would give up their children. Sometimes the smartest one or the most loving! But in reality it was a money-making scheme where the children were mal-nourished and abused. Many died. (Morgan has shut some of these orphanages down through the help of local government who now is cooperating with her).

Morgan has developed a devoted staff to help over 500 children in a few years be returned to their families. She doesn’t stop there. When we were there in the few days, they were also building 7 homes in very remote areas in the hills, she had a clinic on how to treat sexual abuse.  Her heart is endless. Simply saying she is selfless, loving, without borders and brilliant.

Our few days we were involved in a medical clinic in a very rural area where approximately 150 families seeing a doctor for the first time Over these two days they were diagnosed and brought to the hospital or medical lab to get medication. Below are several of the truckloads carrying the children and families to the medical lab or hospital. This was organized and paid for by Little Footprints Big  Steps. Unfortunately one child died. This is how desperate it is.   We ask ourselves where are all the other organizations like the United Red Cross. There are so few in this area that is only four hours at a Port-au-Prince it is almost like nobody cares and in the end the people have no hope.

There were at least 6 truckloads brought to and from the lab or hospital.
We also had the opportunity to meet our long friend Guerna. We first met her through Little Footprints Big Steps around 4 years ago. She was severely burned. Move to Matter paid for her medical treatment because her infections were severe. She is now this 10 year old beautiful little girl. We were thankful to finally meet her.

On this trip we also brought a long list of supplies for the staff and children.

Any money that you may consider donating can literally save a life. These children were actually sick but lovingly put on a happy smile for us.

It takes a village to help a village

8/24/2017

With the support of Ben Schiff at Amity High School, we distributed 30 mosquito bed nets last year. We found in this town that there were many homes that were left out of the distribution. Move to Matter raised money to help the remaining families in this village. Lillian helped us distribute these nets to numerous people in her village. These nets literally save lives and protect locals from mosquitos.

So many people, in not just Kenya, but other parts of Africa can suffer from Malaria, a possibly fatal infection that causes fever, chills and nausea. Malaria is transmitted through the bite of mosquitoes. A large majority of Kenyans suffer from this infection  without net protection and the ability to purchase medicine that can save them. These nets will provide protection over their beds for locals as they sleep at night.  Thank you Lillian and thank you Ben Schiff for  being a special part in helping other children and families.

Approximately 60 children and families were helped through this program.

With the help of Soteni International renovating a building within its village center, the community has established the beginning of a library!

Move To Matter committed years ago to help stock their library .Move to Matter donated over 245  books to Kenya for both young and old ages, and purchased 311 books in Kenya. The majority of the purchased books are academic books for school children of all school grades to use during their month long breaks. This new addition to Soteni International village will bring excitement and learning, to children who are in need of books they are not normally able to attain. Adult readers also have the ability to get access to this wonderful library ! Move To Matter is delighted to have the opportunity in creating a new outlook for the villagers !

As said on Soteni International  facebook page:
"The Cooper family donated over 300 new books and 200 used books for our SOTENI Mbakalo Community Library in the Mary Kibor Community Empowerment Center. We had a full morning of stamping every book with our name AND logging each book into the inventory sheet. An amazing gift to SOTENI, but most of all to the community of Mbakalo. There is no library for several miles. We hope to instill in them the love of reading.
Coopers, we say asante sana!"

Throughout the Move To Matter journey in Kenya, a brief stop at a chief’s meeting shows a large rooted tree in the center. This large rooted tree resembles not only the Kenyan people but also the richness of the country’s culture and history.

Move to Matter attended a village meeting held by a chief that brought villagers from miles away to come together as a community and learn how to better their lives. This meeting talked about balancing their diet with more vegetables rather than the traditional starch-based corn and Ugali. You cannot help to think that this tradition would date back thousands of years.

Kenya is a beautiful East African country filled with kind-hearted citizens and breathtaking landscapes. This tree featured above embodies how expansive the long history and culture is that is rooted in Kenya. When you go to Kenya, you are suddenly immersed in learning about customs and respected traditions that have allowed Kenya to stay strong since its beginning! The native people will welcome you with a warm heart, arms and smile.

More to come.
